A favorite time of the year is spending Christmas with our daughter and family in Fairfield, Idaho. At 5,000 ft. elevation we are almost guaranteed to have several days of snowfall. One of the highlights for me is viewing the elk that winter in that area. One afternoon my son-in-law and I drove out to look for a herd of bull elk spotted the night before. We hadn't even left the yard when we spotted the bulls bedded down in the field, only 100 yards from the house. Only their heads and antlers could be seen above the snow. Fourteen bulls, two 7 x 7's, five 6 x 6's and some smaller ones, jumped to their feet and gracefully paraded through the chest deep snow. They broke into a run making a dash for safety. Late that night we watched by moonlight as they returned for the alfalfa hay we left out for them.......a small thank you for such an amazing show.
